Latest Resource

Snagged this on Ebay. The description of the story is,"At the start of the 21st century, Chinese society still lagged behind the rest of the world in its attitude towards women. Sadly, this has lead to an enormous amount of female babies being aborted, orphaned, or simply abandoned. Orphanages overflow with young girls, and many American couples looking to adopt have travelled to China to help alleviate the problem. This documentary takes a trip with some of the families hoping to adopt a child in China, while also casting a critical eye over the accepted mores of the country."

All I have to say is..."Bring on the Kleenex!"

Actually I have more to say... I was in Edmonton this week for a conference, and in down time went to Chapters(please Oh please let us get one in Grande Prairie!!!). I was disappointed in the lack of resources for adopting parents. There was one book on post adoption depression, and it was a book with flimsy content, more speculations than facts...and then a small hard cover book with some cute, and some meaningful one sentence answers to "I chose you because...". That was it. C'mon Chapters, you can do better than that!

Amazon has some good resources, if you know titles to look for, and getting some of those book used, is NOT a bad thing, it is just a shame in mainstream book shops there aren't better resources available.

Oh well, off to check out Amazon and find some more resources!!

Check back for the tearful review of the movie...coming soon! :)

Hi Guys!!
You will LOVE the movie, I have watched it at least 12 times in the last year. It is great to share with your family & friends so they have a better understanding of what happens once you are in China.
I too have the same impression with Chapters. I dont even look in the "Adoption" section anymore when I go in there. ALl my purchases come from Chapters on-line. If you need some suggestions on good books, I'd love to help. Keep us posted on what you find as well.

Hi Kim,

Cara and I have also read the lost daughters of China. That is definately worth a read, we also got a stark, nearly overwhelming book on attachment disorder(have lent it out to another adopting family so I can't recall the name right now). AD is scary, but we are learning perspecitve and balance in these things also. Fear of AD can cripple you, ignorance of it, is equally crippling. Best balance is to look at the techniques of bonding(which are mostly fun anyhow) and in most cases it will work out...anyhow should save those thoughts for another blog entry :)

Would love to hear of any good resources you have come across, let us know!

We borrowed this from the library. We put a hold request in January and ended up borrowing it in April. It is VERY popular as we could only take it out for 3 days!! Hope that you enjoyed it. I cried buckets of tears when the children were given to their forever families!! I agree with you and Kim regarding Chapters. We have found that Amazon.ca has been a great resource. Our local library in Victoria has also been super. "Wanting a Daughter, Needing a Son" was really insightfull and gave me answers to questions I didn't even know I had.
Cheers,
Kristine

Kristine and Shawn,

Thanks for posting.. I will write more in another blog entry about the movie, but suffice to say, it brought out the kleenex box. I am gonna look into the "Wanting a Daughter, Needing a Son" resource, to see if we can find it for cheap or loan. I just bought Deb Greys book on attachment, which comes highly recommended...will post thoughts once life slows down a bit!
